A Revolutionary Family Experience in Chillicothe

Chillicothe Revolutionary Family Experience brings history to life with live demos, hands-on fun, and iconic sites during America’s 250th.

Like a tree planted beside steady waters, Ohio’s roots run deep in the founding of America. Long before highways and skylines, before statehood and star-spangled celebrations, this land was shaping the story of a nation. As the country prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, Chillicothe invites families to step directly into that story.

Step Back into the Past with a Chillicothe Revolutionary Family Experience

On June 13th and 14th at Adena Mansion & Gardens, A Revolutionary Family Experience will transport visitors to the 18th century. The grounds will echo with artillery demonstrations, musket and rifle drills, soldiers’ kit presentations, and period military music. It won’t just be a lesson in history — it will feel like living inside it.

Guests can explore hands-on exhibits and children’s games, watch cooking demonstrations and beer making, and observe a meaningful flag retirement ceremony. The event also highlights the often-overlooked role of women during the Revolutionary era. You may even spot George Washington and Ben Franklin among the crowd.

It is a rare opportunity to see and truly experience the emergence of our nation.

Discover Chillicothe’s Rich Historical Legacy

Chillicothe’s connection to America’s story extends far beyond one weekend. Throughout the year, visitors can explore the area’s historical contributions through museums, cultural attractions, and educational programming.

“We also have some great museums where visitors can learn about the heritage of Chillicothe/Ross County and early Ohio,” said Gene Betts, Communications Assistant for Visit Chillicothe, Ohio.

History also comes vividly to life on stage each summer.

“For those who enjoy live productions and history coming to life, ‘Tecumseh!’ Outdoor Drama unfolds on the stage at Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre Tuesday through Saturdays, depicting the life of the legendary Shawnee leader,” Betts said.

A Landscape Shaped by Ancient History

Chillicothe’s history stretches back far beyond the Revolutionary era. Nearly 2,000 years ago, this region was a thriving center for early Native American cultures whose remarkable earthworks still stand today.

“This ancient culture constructed huge earthen complexes that are now features on the UNESCO World Heritage list as the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks,” said Betts. “Of the eight sites that are part of the designation, Chillicothe/Ross County has five of those sites.”

Standing near these ancient earthworks, visitors can sense the layers of history rooted in the same soil.

Experience the Birthplace of Ohio Statehood

Today, Chillicothe blends its rich heritage with a vibrant downtown scene. Historic architecture lines the streets, while modern shops, pubs, cafés, and locally owned restaurants offer welcoming places to gather.

As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, there is something especially meaningful about honoring that milestone in the birthplace of Ohio’s statehood.

In Chillicothe, history is not simply remembered. It’s experienced.
