Where the Candy Cane Tradition Was Born

Did you know Wooster is the birthplace of the American candy cane tradition?
“In 1847, German immigrant August Imgard, then living in Wooster, decorated his Christmas tree with white sugar sticks bent into shepherd’s crook shapes,” said Shannon Waller, Executive Director of Main Street Wooster, Inc. “This marks the first documented appearance of candy canes on a U.S. tree.”
Fall in Love with Wooster—All Year Long
Wooster shines at Christmas, but its charm lasts well beyond the holiday season. With a walkable historic downtown, a vibrant arts and education scene, and top-notch dining and shopping, it’s the kind of place people return to—and even relocate to.
“Together, these qualities give Wooster a warm, inclusive character—combining small-town charm with cultural richness that resonates deeply with residents and visitors alike,” said Waller. “It’s not uncommon for people who visit to choose Wooster as their new home when they’re ready for that transition.”
