Ohio’s America 250 Celebration Continues Beyond July 4
Many people think America’s birthday celebration ends when the fireworks fade on July 4. During the nation’s 250th anniversary, however, America 250 Ohio events continue throughout August.
Across Ohio, communities are marking America’s 250th anniversary with historic reenactments, concerts, family activities, and local celebrations. Each event offers distinct experiences of the history and traditions that helped shape the Buckeye State.
America 250 Ohio Events at Put-in-Bay
One of the month’s signature celebrations takes place in Put-in-Bay on August 1-2 during Declaration 250. While July 4 marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, most of the 56 delegates actually signed the document on August 2, 1776, knowing they were risking their lives and livelihoods in support of liberty.
Declaration 250 honors that historic moment with a ceremonial re-signing of the Declaration at Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial. Visitors can enjoy tall ships, Revolutionary War living history demonstrations, keynote speakers, military ceremonies, community leaders from across the nation, performances by The Ohio State University Marching Band, and a fireworks finale over Lake Erie.
Celebrate Ohio’s Early History at Schoenbrunn Village
Schoenbrunn Village in New Philadelphia celebrates Ohio’s 250th anniversary on August 1 with its Ohio’s 250th Celebration & Homecoming Picnic. Visitors are invited to bring their own lunch and enjoy an afternoon at Ohio’s first permanent settlement. The village will offer free crafts, games, demonstrations, and special America 250 programs. Local Moravian churches will also participate, highlighting the community’s history and the people who helped establish Schoenbrunn in 1772.
Music and Community Traditions
On August 9, Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek in West Liberty will host America’s Music, performed by the West Central Ohio Community Concert Band. Bring a lawn chair and settle in for an afternoon of patriotic favorites on the castle grounds as part of Ohio’s America 250 celebration.
Throughout August, county fairs across Ohio also celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. Agriculture, music, local food, youth exhibits, entertainment, and community traditions have long been part of Ohio’s heritage, making fairs a wonderful way to experience the state’s history while creating new memories with family and friends. Many fairs are adding special America 250 programming during this anniversary year.
