For over 30 years, the Appalachian Ohio Group—formerly known as Ohio’s Appalachian Country—has worked to highlight one of Ohio’s most scenic and culturally rich regions. This non-profit tourism association is dedicated to growing travel and tourism across the 32 counties in the region. Understanding that tourism is not only good for the economy, but also serves to preserve traditions and keep communities thriving.
A Region with Deep Roots
The region, known as Appalachia, comprises 32 counties that begin in the northeastern corner of Ohio, in Trumbull County, and extend down to Cincinnati. It is known for its rolling hills, dense forests, winding rivers, and small towns. There is a bold history here. Many families have deep ties to the land, going back multiple generations, and each generation passes down stories of struggle and triumph over the years.
Originally settled for its rich natural resources—coal, timber, and farmland—the region played a significant role in building Ohio’s economy. Over time, the industry underwent significant changes, leading to economic hardship. But what remained strong was the culture, pride, and tight-knit communities.

Today, Appalachian Ohio is a place of renewal. Visitors are discovering what locals have known all along: this region is truly special.
Why Tourism Matters in Appalachian Ohio
Tourism is one of the most sustainable ways to support the Appalachian Region. When people travel here, they stay in locally owned cabins, shop at handmade craft stores, hike in state parks, and enjoy local food. Every visit helps small businesses grow and gives young people more reasons to stay.
The Appalachian Ohio Group collaborates with partners such as TourismOhio and the Governor’s Office of Appalachia, as well as parks, shops, restaurants, and lodging providers, to draw attention to the region’s offerings. Their website and bi-annual Travel Guide highlight attractions, events, and places worth seeing.
More Than Just Travel
This group doesn’t just promote destinations—they support people. Through cooperative marketing, networking, and educational opportunities, they help tourism businesses thrive. Members also benefit from advocacy and mentoring. It’s all powered by a dedicated all-volunteer Board of Trustees that believes in the region and its people.

The Future of Appalachian Ohio
The future here finds its roots in its past. But today it is full of hope. From Bluegrass music to Appalachian cuisine, this area is once again gaining attention. Visitors come, looking for authenticity and a slower pace of life, and Appalachian Ohio offers this in every small town, every grassy hill, and glacier-carved nook.
Thanks to the Appalachian Ohio Group, this region’s voice is growing stronger. The work today ensures that future generations will continue to explore, celebrate, and cherish all that the area has to offer.
