What is a Highland Cow?
Highland Cattle are named after the Scottish Highlands, where this breed originated. Known as coos in Scotland, their long horns and long shaggy coats helped them survive brutal winters. The first Highland Cattle in the United States were sent here in the 1890’s. Over the years, these adorable cows have been bred to mini-sized and even micro-mini-sized breeds. Their sweet dispositions make them perfect for petting zoos and mini farms. Highland cattle are known as “gentle giants” – they have the calmest temperament of any cattle breed!

In Ohio, several farms offer Highland Cow experiences. You can find experiences where you can get up close and personal with cows. Some farms will even travel with their cows to fun events around the state.
