An Ecological Wonder Beneath the Vines
Put-in-Bay might be best known for its island charm and waterfront fun, but tucked beneath the surface lies something truly extraordinary—Crystal Cave. This natural wonder is located at Heineman Winery and holds the largest geode in the world.
Crystal Cave: A Natural Landmark
As you enter the cave, you’ll find yourself surrounded by sparkling celestine crystals, a mineral made of strontium sulfate. These light-blue crystals cover the walls and can reach nearly 3 feet across, creating a beautiful and unforgettable sight. The temperature inside stays cool, so bring a light sweater even on warm summer days.
Tours are offered daily from early May through late September. Adult admission is $8, and kids (ages 6–11) can join for just $4. Tours run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
A Cave with a Story
Crystal Cave was discovered in 1897 when miners digging a well for Heineman Winery stumbled into a hidden underground world. Initially, the crystals were mined and sold to make fireworks—an act that expanded the cave into the spacious chamber visitors see today.
During Prohibition, when alcohol production came to a halt across the country, Put-in-Bay’s 17 wineries closed—except for one. Norman Heineman, the son of winery founder Gustav Heineman, recognized an opportunity. He opened Crystal Cave to visitors and sold tickets along with unfermented grape juice. This choice kept the winery running and ensured the cave would remain an essential part of Put-in-Bay’s history.
Heineman Winery: A Sip of Island Tradition
Gustav Heineman, an immigrant from Germany’s well-known Baden wine region, started Heineman Winery in 1888. The Lake Erie Islands’ rich soil and long growing season helped the winery grow. Today, it makes a wide range of wines from native island grapes, with Pink Catawba as its best seller.
Visitors can relax in the lush wine garden, sip a flight, nibble on cheese plates, and pick up a few bottles—and maybe a crystal geode—from the gift shop.
