How One Fine Dining Restaurant Is Changing Lives One Decadent Meal at a Time

By Trish Mann

Since 2018, The Sérénité Restaurant and Culinary Institute has been transforming the fine dining landscape in Medina County and changing the lives of those who work there.

We all make mistakes. We all have struggles and need a hand-up occasionally; sometimes, we need a second chance. In collaboration with The Recovery Center of Medina County, The Sérénité Restaurant & Culinary Institute is doing just that.

Giving a second chance to those in addiction recovery is at the core of the restaurant. The students range in age from their 20s- 50s and have a history of struggling with alcohol and drug abuse. Most of them have families that depend on them.

During an eight-month program, the students learn the techniques of classic French cuisine and all aspects of the culinary industry, including cooking, hospitality, and front-of-house training. The elevated menu and skill building provide the necessary skills for employment in fine dining restaurants and hospitality, offering higher wages to help support a family.

There is no judgment here. Executive Chef Todd Whitman knows firsthand what his students are going through. He was both an addict and incarcerated and understands firsthand the students’ struggle.

A visit to this cutting-edge restaurant will have you enjoying an assortment of high-end appetizers, such as Oyster Rockefeller served with a Bechamel sauce with garlic, parmesan, bacon, & shallot. You may prefer Coquilles Saint Jacques, an irresistible creamy scallop dish.

The dinner selections range from burgers to trout, lobster, and caviar. A popular item is a mouthwatering 12 oz strip steak served with a cognac cream sauce and demi-glace with green peppercorns. Try one of the signature specialties, such as Duck L’orange, or French Mac-n-cheese made with Gruyere cheese. To make it even more tempting, add lobster for an additional charge.

The Sérénité Restaurant in Medina, Ohio, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The proceeds go towards making a difference in the lives of good people who made mistakes and are working hard to make a better life.
