Where the Mountains of Southwest Virginia Sing

There’s a route through Southwest Virginia that I can’t stop thinking about. It’s called The Crooked Road, and it weaves through 330 miles of small towns, quiet hollows, and ridge-lined highways—places where music still spills from front porches and Friday nights are made for flatfoot dancing.

I haven’t traveled there yet, but it’s at the top of my list. Not just for the scenery (though the Blue Ridge views are reason enough), but because this trail tells a story—one you don’t just hear, but feel.

Discover Appalachian Music History in Bristol, Virginia

The journey begins in Bristol, where the 1927 recording sessions—often called the “big bang of country music”—launched a genre that changed America. The Birthplace of Country Music Museum is a collection of artifacts and an interactive dive into the roots of Appalachian sound. Paying homage to the voices that sang their lives into microphones for the first time.

Explore Live Music Venues on Virginia’s Crooked Road

From Bristol, The Crooked Road winds through towns that still pulse with rhythm. The Floyd Country Store hosts the famous Friday Night Jamboree. Here, locals, travelers, and musicians gather for hours dancing and listening to live bluegrass.

In Hiltons, the Carter Family Fold continues to honor the legacy of country music pioneers with weekly acoustic performances that draw people from all over.

Bluegrass Roots at the Ralph Stanley Museum and Beyond

Further along, Clintwood invites visitors to the Ralph Stanley Museum. Preserved through exhibits, personal artifacts, and Stanley’s unmistakable voice, you will discover the raw beauty of bluegrass. Nearby, small festivals and town squares bring together players who’ve never met. Yet, they seem to know each other through music alone.
