Flashing lights, the whirring of spinning wheels, laughter, moans, and sudden bursts of cheers following the clanging of coins, we just walked into Mountaineer Casino.
Along the Ohio River, tucked into the mountains, is Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort. I was fortunate to spend a little time here and was pleasantly surprised by what I discovered.
The resort offers something for everyone. Tee off at the 18-hole championship golf course, relax in the indoor or outdoor pool, pamper yourself at the spa, and dine at one of the six eateries ranging from quick deli snacks, the Mahogany Sports Bar to fine dining at LBV Steak House. And, of course, slots, table games, horse racing, and live entertainment round out the experience.
My husband and I and another couple enjoyed a stay at the resort over the winter. Although we did not take in horse racing, we enjoyed a delicious pizza for lunch in the Mahogany Sports Bar and casual fun in the casino. We ended the evening with one of the best steaks I have ever had at the LBV Steak House. My husband ordered the pasta bolognese and still raves about it six months later.
Our time in the casino was a lot of fun. We enjoy table games which not all casinos have, and soon found a blackjack table that wasn’t too busy. Although we are both novices, we decided to play a little. Fortunately, a lovely gentleman was playing at the table, and we began conversing about how to bet, when to pass, etc. The dealer also chimed in and was helpful too. By the end of our stay, we walked away more knowledgeable and, in the positive, a couple of hundred dollars—definitely a win-win experience.
They have a nice assortment of slot machines with different betting amounts, making deciding which ones to play fun. We found a few old favorites and played some new ones. But ultimately, our luck remained at the table games this trip.
Our stay at the Mountaineer was a fun and relaxing weekend getaway, and we are planning our next trip to include the Thoroughbred Horse Racing, which begins April 30th. The hotel is adjacent to the casino and provides comfortable, stylish rooms. When planning your visit, make sure to spend a night or two.
