Run Into Fall at Races You Won’t Want to Miss in Northeast Ohio

Fall Races in Northeast Ohio

After many hot, brutal summer races, the fall season descends upon us with much relief. Cooler temperatures allow for harder, faster, and longer runs while maximizing your time. But what do you do as a runner with all this newfound cooler running time? Race! Throughout the fall season, there are tons of fall racing opportunities for all sorts of runners. From casual 5ks and serious, competitive half marathons to fun runs, autumn offers some of the best races of the year.

The Best Season to Set Your PR

Many runners struggle in the summer heat; even in the early hours of the morning, there is no relief. The intense sun causes many runners not to PR or run anywhere near the times they expected. But with cooler fall weather, runners can really put all that hard-earned training to use. Cooler fall temperatures allow runners to train more freely throughout the day without risking dehydration or worse, heat stroke. Instead, runners can run faster and farther with the heat dialed back.

Runners know the feeling: “Man, I’m gonna PR today! I’m really pushing it and feel fast!” only for the clock to humble them. They feel their goal pace was too fast and out of reach, or they ran too hard. But with a good fall race, you don’t run into that issue. Without the scorching sun drying you out and drenching you in sweat, you can finally set a PR.

Spice Up Your Training With Fall Races in Northeast Ohio

But running just to run can become boring, and you might need to add some seasonal spice! That is where these great races all offer something different for every runner. Never run a half marathon or a full? Check out the Akron Marathon Race Series held in September, where you can run a full, half, or relay marathon through Akron City. This event series has a lively competitive spirit and attracts many runners.

For those looking for a shorter race that’s just as unique, try the CAK 5k on the Runway. The MAPS Air Museum hosts this 5k on its airstrip. Run among classic aviation and military equipment as airplanes take off from the Canton-Akron Airport. This race features an after-party, a celebration of all those who put their feet on the pavement.

Leading up to Halloween, there are always some festive races to be run! There are two great races with varying lengths for all runners. Gourdy’s Pumpkin Run 5k takes place in the heart of downtown Akron. Enjoy the sights Akron has to offer, and cool off afterward with apple cider and a complimentary pumpkin. Maybe you want something a little more spooky for your October run. The Haunted Forest Marathon race series lets you run a full marathon, half marathon, or 5k in beautiful Canal Fulton. And of course, no fall running is complete without a Turkey Trot 5k. You can find these races all over! Nearly every town, township, and city hosts their own Turkey Trot.

Find Your Finish Line

So, get out there! Take advantage of the cooler weather and add some seasonal spice to your fall this year with a seasonally themed race. Whether it is to set a new PR, to take a shot at a new distance you haven’t done before, or just to walk along and appreciate the scenes and sights this fall.

While you’re in the area, get your gear from Canton’s Second Sole: Where the Love of Running Meets Community. Get out this fall and enjoy the cooler weather on your feet.
