4 Easy Steps on Documenting Your Summer Adventures

Summer brings road trips, vacations, and spontaneous day adventures. But as the seasons change, the vivid colors of those memories can fade. Thankfully, there’s one tool most of us always carry—our smartphone—that can help us hold onto those fleeting moments forever.

Years ago, cameras from brands like Canon, Nikon, and Sony were essential for travel photography. I still pack my trusty Canon for big adventures, but sometimes, I just want to keep it simple. That’s when my iPhone becomes my favorite travel companion.

Why Your Smartphone is the Best Travel Camera

Today’s smartphones are more than just convenient—they’re powerful. They let us snap high-quality images, record full HD videos, and capture the sounds, colors, and emotions of each experience.

For instance, my iPhone allows me to record a video while simultaneously taking still photos. Most Androids offer this feature, too. This allows me to live in the moment and document it, all at once.

Smartphone Photography Tips to Elevate Your Shots

Whether you’re using an iPhone or Android, here are a few features and tricks I use to make my photos pop:

  • Use the Camera Grid
Turn on the grid to apply the rule of thirds. This helps you align the horizon or center your subject for a more balanced composition. (See the image of my girl, Gracie, below.)

  • Tap to Focus
Simply tap the screen to set the focus point. A yellow box appears, and you can adjust brightness using the sun icon next to it. It ensures your photos are crisp and well-lit.
  • Try Burst Mode
For action shots—like kids playing or fast-moving scenes—hold down the shutter to shoot in burst mode. You’ll have multiple shots to choose from, increasing your odds of a great one.
  • Flip the Phone
Turn your phone upside down to shoot from ground level. This trick adds drama, especially with puddles or reflections, and opens up creative perspectives.

Start Practicing Today

Your smartphone can do much more, including extended exposures, blurred backgrounds, and editing. The best way to be comfortable with your smartphone camera settings is to get out and start experimenting. Soon, you will be capturing professional-looking images of all your adventures.

Don’t let your summer adventures fade away. Use the camera in your pocket to freeze those joyful moments in time.
