New Year’s Day has a way of making us look ahead. New calendars. New plans. New trips penciled in with hope and exitement. But if travel has taught us anything, it’s that plans don’t always go as expected—and travel mishaps stories often become the ones we laugh about the most.
One of our favorite travel memories didn’t start out funny at all.
Why We Always Travel a Day Early
We were heading out on a cruise, and if there’s one rule we follow, it’s this: always fly in a day early. Extra time means less stress, right? That plan works well—unless your luggage decides to take its own vacation.
My husband’s suitcase never made it to our destination. At first, we stayed calm. Surely it would arrive on the next flight. Then came another update. And another. No luggage. No clear answers.

The Lost Luggage Travel Story That Still Makes Us Laugh
Eventually, we did what many travelers end up doing. We headed to the store.
We walked the aisles, picked out shirts, shorts, socks, and all the basics. We joked about how this might turn into an entirely new cruise wardrobe. After about an hour, we stood in line at checkout, ready to pay.
That’s when the phone rang.
They had found the luggage.
Right then. Right there. After all that effort. We laughed, put everything back, and walked out empty handed—but with one of our favorite travel mishaps stories to tell.
Why Funny Travel Stories Stick With Us
Lost luggage. Wrong turns. Delayed flights. These moments feel stressful in the moment, but they rarely ruin a trip. Instead, they turn into stories shared over dinners, holidays, and years later when someone says, “Remember that time…?”
Travel doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.

Looking Ahead to Travel in 2026
As we step into 2026, many of us are already dreaming about what’s next. Weekend getaways. Long planned vacations. That trip you’ve been saving for finally getting a date on the calendar.
If travel teaches us anything, it’s to pack patience along with our clothes. A little flexibility makes room for laughter, connection, and memories that last longer than any itinerary.
Here’s to a new year filled with boarding passes, open roads, and stories worth sharing—travel mishaps and all.
