History, Fireworks, and a 50-Year-Old Time Capsule

America turns 250 this year. And Ohio is not sitting this one out. From the shores of Lake Erie to the river towns down south, events are happening in all 88 counties. Most are free. All of them tell a piece of the Ohio story.

This is your guide to what is going on across the state — the history, the outdoors, the fairs, and the festivals. From a buried time capsule at the State Fair to a July 4th cookout on Lake Erie, there is a lot happening. Here is a look at what is going on across Ohio — and why it is worth the drive.

America 250 Events in Ohio: A Fort, a Story, and a Piece of History

Most people think the American Revolution happened somewhere on the East Coast. But the fight came west, too. Ohio was on the frontier. And the people who lived and died here shaped the outcome of that war.

Fort Laurens Presentation — Lawrence County | Dates via america250-ohio.org

Only one Revolutionary War fort was built inside what is now Ohio. Fort Laurens. The soldiers there endured brutal cold, starvation, and near-constant threat on the western edge of the young nation. The Lawrence County Genealogical Society is bringing that story back to life with a historical presentation. Check america250-ohio.org for scheduled dates.

It is not a big, flashy event. It is a room full of people learning about something that happened right here — something most Ohio residents have never heard of. That is the best kind of history.

America 250 Events in Ohio: Get Outside: Trails, Water & Open Air

Ohio summers were made for this. Grab a bike or a lawn chair and head somewhere you have never been before.

Great Ohio Bike Adventure

U.S. Route 250 cuts right through Ohio. This year it doubles as a history trail. Cyclists can ride the corridor and stop at historic sites, small towns, and scenic overlooks along the way. It is a moving celebration — the kind where the journey is the point.

Marblehead Lighthouse July 4th Celebration

This summer, head north to the lake. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is hosting a July 4th cookout at Marblehead Lighthouse. Ice cream. Games. Swimming. And when dark falls, you can watch Cedar Point’s fireworks light up the sky over Lake Erie. There are not many better places in Ohio to spend the 4th.

The Lake Erie shoreline on the 4th of July is one of those Ohio experiences that does not get talked about enough. If you have not done it, this is the year.

America 250 Events in Ohio: Fairs, Festivals & a Time Capsule

Some of the best America 250 moments this year will happen right at the county fair. Ohio knows how to do a fair. And in 2026, the stakes are a little higher than usual.

Ohio State Fair — Columbus | Late July/August 2026

In 1976 — the year of America’s Bicentennial — someone buried a time capsule on the Ohio State Fair grounds. This summer, they will dig it up. Many alive today do not know exactly what is inside. That mystery alone is worth the trip. A new capsule will be buried for the next 50 years. There will also be a new Ohio History experience at the fair. It is a handshake between past and future.

Wood County July 4th Festival

This one is pure Americana. Picnic food, local trucks, free inflatables, and games for kids of all ages. The night closes with a 30-minute fireworks show visible from across the fairgrounds. Simple, local, and exactly right for the occasion.

A Year with Something Every Month

Ohio did not just plan one big party. The state designed an entire year of celebration — a different theme each month, each one spotlighting a piece of what Ohio gave to America.

May is Arts, Culture, and Literature. June goes outdoors. July is the big homecoming — friends, family, and fireworks. August brings the State Fair and its buried secrets. September turns to Sports, with a nod to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. October is Agriculture. November honors Veterans. And in December, Ohio looks forward — imagining what the next 50 years might hold.

“Ohio is weaving a rich set of stories that only family members tell — the kind that highlight the full range of experiences and contributions to Ohio’s evolution over 250+ years.” — America 250-Ohio
