Celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary are already underway in Chillicothe and Ross County. This milestone offers a moment to reflect on the people, places, and events that shaped both Ohio and the nation. Throughout 2026, visitors will find many meaningful ways to engage with this history through special programs, tours, and community events.
Early History and the Hopewell Legacy
Ross County’s story stretches far beyond the founding of the United States. Long before Ohio became a state, the region was home to the ancestors of early Native Americans. Their large ceremonial earthworks are now recognized as Ohio’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site. These structures were built more than 2,000 years ago with remarkable precision. They align with key movements of the sun and moon.
A visit to the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park offers a powerful reminder of their scientific skill and creativity. These earthworks reflect the achievements of the area’s earliest inhabitants.

The First Capital and Early Leadership
Chillicothe played a significant role in Ohio’s early years as the First Capital. Leaders gathered here to shape the foundation of the new state. Today, visitors can explore this past at the Ross County Heritage Center. Exhibits highlight local industry, daily life, and the people who helped guide Ohio forward.
Adena Mansion and Gardens adds another layer to this history. The stone home on the hill was where Thomas and Eleanor Worthington raised their large family. Thomas Worthington played a significant role in Ohio’s early government. He served as one of the state’s first U.S. senators and worked in Washington during the push for statehood.
He later served in the Ohio legislature and returned to the U.S. Senate before becoming Ohio’s sixth governor. His time in office included efforts to improve transportation and support early canal development. Today, the home offers a clear look at life in the early 19th century.

Bringing 18th-Century Life to Adena
One of the biggest America 250 moments in 2026 will take place at Adena on June 13–14, 2026, when the Brigade of the American Revolution brings 18th-century life to the property. Artillery demonstrations, musket drills, cooking displays, children’s activities, and appearances by historical figures like George Washington and Ben Franklin bring the era to life in vivid detail.
Yearlong America 250 Programs
The celebration continues throughout 2026 with the First Capital Speaker Series. These monthly sessions explore Ohio’s story through topics such as industry, entertainment, transportation, agriculture, nature, and veterans’ contributions. Each talk offers visitors a chance to learn more about the state’s past and future.
As America marks 250 years, Ross County offers a meaningful place to walk through centuries of history. Visitors can experience stories that continue to inspire and shape life today. For more information, visit www.visitchillicotheohio.com.
