Experience History on the Front Lines
One of Ohio’s largest Civil War reenactments returns to Historic Zoar Village on Saturday, September 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, September 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The village will come alive with marching soldiers, bustling encampments, and stirring moments from one of America’s most defining chapters.
On Saturday, guests can witness a powerful recreation of the Battle of Appomattox, a pivotal moment that led to the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and the beginning of the war’s end. This year marks the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Appomattox and the 23rd anniversary of Zoar’s renowned reenactment event.
The weekend will be packed with interactive experiences for all ages. “Meet” a variety of critical historical figures like Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman, listen to stories from a New York Herald war reporter, and tap your toes to period songs performed by a Civil War songstress. Don’t miss the Camp Chase display, a traveling exhibit from the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, and demonstrations presented by Spring Hill Historic Site.
On Saturday night, the skies will light up with artillery night fire, followed by a festive historical ball complete with delicious food from the Anvil Tavern.
Museums, Shops, and More!

All museum buildings and shops will also be open throughout the event, with costumed interpreters sharing stories about the unique pacifist stance of the Zoar community during the war.
Don’t forget to stop by the Zoar Bakery for freshly baked bread, delicious pies, cookies, and other homemade treats.
Art lovers can explore the Adam Lehr “Landscapes of Memory” art exhibit, featuring stunning works that celebrate Zoar’s cultural legacy. Finally, the Bimeler Cabin will be open for general tours, taking visitors back into daily life during the 19th century with handcrafted furniture made by the original settlers.
Admission is $12 for adults and free for kids 12 and under. Tickets include access to the reenactment, museum buildings, and special programming. All proceeds from this event support the ongoing educational programming and architectural restoration efforts for Historic Zoar Village.
