Warm up your winter with a mug of Glühwein!

A copper pot with oranges, and spices making the mulled wine Gluhwein

Sip, Savor, and Soak in the Holiday Spirit with this German Mulled Wine

Last week, I wandered through a Christkindl market, completely charmed by the twinkling lights, cozy booths, and festive smells. It was remarkably chilly, and as I walked through the market, I spied steaming cups of Glühwein. This warm, spiced red wine was like a little miracle in a mug, warming me from the inside out. It’s one of those things that instantly makes you feel festive, even if your hands are freezing.

After trying it, I had to learn more. Glühwein (pronounced “gloo-vine”) has roots in Germany and Austria and has been a Christmas market staple for centuries. Its name translates to “glow wine,” referring to the glowing hot irons historically used to heat it. Today, it’s enjoyed across Europe during the holidays and ridiculously easy to make at home.

Here’s how I brought a little Christkindl market magic into my kitchen:

Glühwein Recipe

What you need:

  • 1 bottle of dry red wine (a Merlot or Cabernet works great)
  • 1 cup orange juice (or use water for a less sweet version)
  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4-5 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise (optional, but so festive)
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 lemon, thinly sliced
  • Optional: A shot of brandy for a little extra warmth

What to do:

  1. In a large pot, combine the orange juice (or water) and honey or sugar. Heat on medium until the sweetener dissolves.
  2. Add the cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and citrus slices. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes to let the flavors mingle.
  3. Pour in the wine and turn the heat to low. Warm it gently—don’t let it boil, or it’ll lose its flavor (and alcohol).
  4. Taste it. Want it sweeter? Add a little more honey or sugar. Feeling bold? Add a splash of brandy.
  5. Strain into mugs or glasses, garnish with an orange slice or a cinnamon stick and serve immediately.

Why You’ll Love Glühwein

Not only does Glühwein taste amazing, but it also makes your house smell like the holidays. It’s perfect for cozy nights with family, small gatherings, or even just treating yourself after a long day.

Try it—you’ll see why this drink has been a holiday favorite for centuries!
