Discover what so many locals already know. Portage County’s fall is home to the best-hidden treasures. Whether you are looking for a weekend getaway, a day of exploring, or a day of fall fun, Portage County has something for everyone.

Exploring Portage County’s Fall Foliage and Outdoor Activities

When the leaves start changing, our three state parks light up with color. They are perfect locations for those who enjoy fall hikes, picnics, or migratory bird watching. In addition to our beautiful fall foliage, visitors from all over make a road trip to Portage County to enjoy our apple orchards, play in our corn mazes, shop at the various farmers’ markets, and enjoy one of our unique fall festivals.

Balloons, Saurkraut, and More! Portage County’s Fall Fun Events

Speaking of fall festivals, every September, the members of the Akron German Family Society Club band together to put on one of the best Oktoberfest events in northeast Ohio. From the folk dancers who practice long hours to the volunteer kitchen staff that start prepping weeks in advance, this family-friendly event draws visitors from both in and out of state. This year, they are celebrating their 50th festival year. They will be serving their famous schnitzel, Sarma, sausage, German potato salad, sauerkraut, pastries, and other festival favorites. There is even a Biergarten (September 6-8, 2024).

For those who love big, beautiful balloons, the Ravenna Balloon A-Fair (September 19-22) starts its festival with a balloon glow at dusk. It is followed by a weekend of hot air balloons, entertainment, helicopter rides, a Jeep Show, a midway, and, if weather permits, a balloon launch.

Brimfest and Main Street Kent Oktoberfest

For those looking for a small-town festival, Brimfield Township’s Brimfest offers family-friendly events, entertainment, food vendors, and more (September 27-28). Live music, local breweries, vendors, and folk dancers are at this year’s Main Street Kent Oktoberfest (September 21).
