Fall in Portage County brings simple joys—colorful leaves, crisp air, and places that bring families together. From outdoor adventures to cozy meals, it’s the perfect time to explore and unwind.
Your Fall Adventure in Portage County begins at Wingfoot Lake State Park
Start your day at Wingfoot Lake State Park. A favorite of my family, this park offers something for everyone. Kids love the large playground and the Storybook Trail, where pages from a children’s book line the path, encouraging little ones to read and walk as they go.

There is also a Nature Center and a floating bridge that everyone will enjoy. If you keep your eyes to the skies, you may just see an eagle soar across the lake, as well as many other species of birds known to the area. There are numerous picnic tables and shelters, while the soaring trees offer shade in the summer and a canvas of color in the fall.
Fishing is another favorite here. The lake is stocked with bass, bluegill, and catfish, making it a great spot for beginners and seasoned anglers alike. Not into fishing? No problem. There’s also a disc golf course, basketball court, and open fields for tossing a frisbee or just enjoying the view. With restrooms, picnic shelters, a dog park, and plenty of parking, it’s easy to spend the entire morning here. You may even catch a glimpse of the Goodyear Blimp, which is housed just across the lake.
Afternoon: Sip, Savor, and Stay a While at Crafted Artisan Meadery
After a day of play, head just a few miles east to Crafted Artisan Meadery, a local favorite that blends creativity and comfort. Founded in 2012, this area gem began with a passion for crafting small-batch mead—the world’s oldest fermented beverage. Using locally sourced honey and natural ingredients, the result is a drink that celebrates both tradition and innovation.

The tasting room, which is located in a repurposed church, is casual and family-friendly, offering a laid-back setting where everyone feels welcome. Try a mead flight to sample seasonal blends like Cranberry Apple or Bourbon Barrel Aged Honey. Pair your drink with one of their handcrafted flatbreads, like the Greek Goddess, topped with garlic butter, artichokes, sundried tomatoes, feta cheese, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. Add chicken for extra flavor or choose a gluten-free crust.
It’s the kind of place where good food and friendly faces make you want to linger and enjoy the fleeting days of fall.
