Tucked along State Road 47 in Parke County, Indiana, Turkey Run State Park cuts through a landscape marked by stone and shadow. Deep ravines and sheer cliffs rise beside stands of untouched forest. Water carved the paths long ago, but time still leaves its mark with every step beneath the trees.
Climb Through Gorges and Glacial History
Outdoor enthusiasts consider Turkey Run Indiana’s best-kept secret, and for good reason. Trails slice through sandstone gorges carved by glacial melt thousands of years ago. Some climb wooden ladders. Others twist through tight canyons or pass beneath towering trees that have weathered more than a hundred winters. Each path leads somewhere different—each one shaped by time.
The Rocky Hollow–Falls Canyon Nature Preserve, spanning 1,600 acres, is a testament to the park’s variety and challenge, making it a must-visit destination for adventure seekers.

Where Indiana’s Park History Took Shape
In 1916, a timber company almost bought this land to harvest its old-growth trees. However, the vision and determination of conservationist Col. Richard Lieber and local supporters saved it for the state. This act of preservation not only gave birth to Turkey Run as Indiana’s second state park but also laid the foundation for the entire Indiana State Parks system. Start Your Adventure at the Suspension Bridge
Most hiking trails begin after crossing a 70-step descent to the suspension bridge over Sugar Creek. Once across, you enter Rocky Hollow–Falls Canyon Nature Preserve. This protected area contains some of the last remaining old-growth forests in the state of Indiana.
Take the 5 Mile Challenge
Begin at the Nature Center and hike the perimeter trails in a clockwise loop. You’ll pass through three canyons, climb a ladder, and visit the historic Lusk Home. Finish the loop in under three hours and earn a commemorative sticker. Trail maps help guide the way.
