Fulton County summer events pack more into one season than most regions manage all year. This northwest Ohio county sits in flat farm country, easy to pass through and easy to underestimate. History, horsepower, live events, and food are worth the drive. It’s all here.
Who Was Barney Oldfield?
Barney Oldfield was born in 1878 in York Township, grew up poor and restless near Wauseon, and never finished high school. He raced bicycles, then talked his way into the seat of Henry Ford’s monster race car — a machine called the “999” with no suspension and more power than anyone wanted to handle.
He won. The publicity helped launch Ford Motor Company, and by 1910, he held the world land speed record at 131.724 mph. He went on to star on Broadway, appeared in early Hollywood films, and owned his own saloon in California.
The Museum & Welcome Center of Fulton County in Wauseon celebrates his story this summer as part of Ohio Goes to the Movies, a statewide America 250 event featuring free film screenings in all 88 Ohio counties. The county honors him on June 20th with Barney Oldfield Day, including free movies, a no-entry-fee car show, and the noon unveiling of his actual race helmet. Want to get a head start? Sauder Village Is More Than a Museum
Over in Archbold, Sauder Village covers 235 acres of living history, comprising more than 40 buildings. Working artisans. Hands-on demonstrations for all ages. The Doughbox Bakery and Barn Restaurant keep everyone fed. Summer-themed weeks run throughout July, and lodging is on-site at the Sauder Heritage Inn.
Fulton County Summer Events Fill the Fairgrounds All Season Long
The Fulton County Fairgrounds in Wauseon hosts two standout events. The National Threshers Reunion (June 25–28, 2026) draws thousands for steam engines, antique tractors, and demonstrations dating back to 1945. The Midwest GeoBash, a free, family-friendly geocaching festival, rolls in late July for its 21st year.
Horse shows, dog shows, antique motorcycle races, and swap meets fill the rest of the calendar.
Racing Still Runs in the County’s Blood
Oakshade Raceway runs Saturday nights all season on its 3/8-mile dirt oval. The annual Barney Oldfield Race rolls out every June, paying $5,000 to win in tribute to the county’s most famous son. Delta Motorsports rounds out the racing scene with additional events throughout the season. Check local listings for current schedules.
Festivals Worth the Stop
The Delta Chicken Festival, Swanton Corn Festival, and Royal Bullthistle Arts Festival each bring small-town Ohio at its best to the summer calendar. Local wineries and breweries round out the experience.
