Spring arrives early at Indian Lake State Park when the air carries the scent of pancakes and warm maple syrup. Now in its 39th year, the Indian Lake Maple Festival invites families and visitors to celebrate one of Ohio’s sweetest seasonal traditions through food, learning, and time outdoors.

Held at the Indian Lake State Park Campground, the festival centers on a hearty pancake breakfast topped with locally made maple syrup. Throughout the weekend, guests enjoy live demonstrations showing how sap becomes syrup. Meanwhile, vendor booths and activities add to the experience. As a result, it feels welcoming for first-time visitors, while many families return each year.
Indian Lake Maple Festival Signals Spring
Maple syrup season depends on a short window when cold nights and warmer days work together. When late winter and early spring strike that balance, it signals that winter is loosening its grip and spring is near.
During the festival, demonstrations guide visitors from tapping trees to boiling sap. In turn, seeing how much sap it takes to make one gallon builds appreciation for every pour. For kids, it becomes hands-on learning. For adults, it highlights how closely Ohio traditions follow seasonal rhythms.
That connection runs deep in Logan County. In 1903, the county ranked fifth in Ohio for maple sugar production. At the time, more than 100,000 maple trees produced tens of thousands of gallons each season. Today, that tradition remains at the heart of the Indian Lake Maple Festival.

A Lake with a Long History
Long before Indian Lake became a recreation destination, the area was a collection of small lakes and wetlands. In the mid-1800s, it expanded into Lewistown Reservoir to supply water to the Miami and Erie Canal. When canal travel declined, the lake continued to serve nearby communities.
In 1898, Ohio designated the area as public recreation space and renamed it Indian Lake. Today, the lake spans roughly 5,800 acres. As a result, it attracts visitors for boating, fishing, camping, and seasonal events such as the Maple Festival.
Make a Day or Weekend of It
After breakfast and demonstrations, the Indian Lake Maple Festival offers time to enjoy the outdoors. Visitors can stroll along the lake’s shore, explore nearby parks, or stay the weekend at the campground. Altogether, it blends the season, local flavor, Ohio history, and a cherished tradition.
