Morgan County Outdoor Recreation Grows with Appalachian Hills Visitor Center

Outdoor recreation has long drawn visitors to Morgan County, Ohio. With thousands of acres of public land, three state parks, and miles of trails and waterways, the area offers space to hike, fish, hunt, camp, and explore. Soon, visitors will have a new place to begin their outdoor adventure. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is preparing to open a visitor center at Appalachian Hills Wildlife Area. The site sits between McConnelsville and Cumberland.

The Appalachian Hills Wildlife Area Visitor Center will serve as a starting point for those discovering the region’s natural landscapes. The two-story timber structure will include indoor and outdoor learning spaces. Exhibits will introduce visitors to wildlife, habitats, and outdoor opportunities across southeast Ohio.

Learning About the Landscape

Inside the building, educational displays and interactive exhibits highlight the history of the land. They also introduce the diverse environments that shape the wildlife area.
Floor-to-ceiling windows will look out across rolling hills and open grasslands, offering a wide view of the surrounding landscape.

Outdoor viewing areas will extend the experience. A 360-degree scenic ramp and observation deck will give visitors elevated vantage points. From here, they can watch wildlife and enjoy views across the Appalachian foothills.

The Return of the Bison

One of the most anticipated additions to the center will be a small herd of American bison. Bison once roamed across Ohio, but disappeared from the region during the 1800s. Their presence at the Appalachian Hills will help visitors learn about Ohio’s early wildlife history. It also highlights the importance of protecting natural habitats.
