There’s a bridge in McKean County, Pennsylvania, that an F1 tornado hit dead center in July 2003. In less than 30 seconds, eleven of the twenty towers crashed to the valley floor below. Pennsylvania left them right where they fell. Then they built a glass-floor walkway out over the gorge and invited everyone to come look.

Kinzua Bridge: Still Standing, Still Worth the Drive
Built in 1882, the Kinzua Viaduct was one of the tallest railroad bridges on earth — 301 feet high, 2,053 feet long, nicknamed “the Eighth Wonder of the World.” On July 21, 2003, workers had just cleared the site when 90-mph winds tore through the valley and dropped eleven towers into the creek bed below.
But Pennsylvania didn’t rebuild them. The twisted steel sits right where it landed. The surviving six towers became the Kinzua Skywalk — a 600-foot walkway with a glass-floor deck at the end. Stand out there, look straight down at the wreckage, and you’ll understand why people drive hours to get here.
The Skywalk reopens September 1 – October 31, 2026, for the fall foliage season, with peak color late September through mid-October. Arrive early on weekends — the lot fills fast. The park, visitor center, and trails are open year-round.
Weekend One: Swedish Roots on the Allegheny National Forest Fall Trail
Mt. Jewett Swedish Festival — August 7–9, 2026
Mt. Jewett sits less than 10 minutes from Kinzua Bridge and carries Swedish heritage that goes back generations. Every second weekend of August, three full days of Swedish Smorgasbord, Maypole Dancing, Viking Ship Races, folk music, a Saturday parade at 5 p.m., and fireworks at 9:30 fill the town. The Swedish Meatball Contest alone is worth it.
Pair a festival weekend with a morning walk at Kinzua, and you’ve got a solid two-day trip.
Weekend Two: Sunflowers, Spirits, and Allegheny National Forest Fall Color
Wilds Sonshine Factory Sunflower Festival — Typically Late August
Head west on Route 6 toward Kane, and acres of sunflowers appear along the road. The Wilds Sonshine Factory is the only seed-to-still sunflower distillery in the world. Their spirit “Sonshine” is made entirely from PA Wilds-grown sunflowers, and the name is trademarked to place, the way Tequila ties to agave. Live music, 30-plus vendors, food trucks, a car and bike show, and two tasting bars at 3480 Route 6 West in Kane.
