A Vinton County, Ohio, fall is something worth planning around. The hills catch fire with red and orange as the air turns cool and invigorating. If you’ve never paddled Raccoon Creek while the leaves are turning, you’re missing one of Ohio’s quietest thrills.

On the Water This Fall in Vinton County
The livery runs canoe and kayak rentals from April through October. However, September and October are the sweet spot. Water levels calm down as the crowds thin out. The trees along the banks turn gold and rust as Osprey soar overhead.
Choose your route: a five-mile float (about 90 minutes) or a seven-mile stretch for more time on the water. Staff shuttles you upstream, and you can drift back at your own pace, stop to fish, pull ashore, or let the current carry you. Bring your own vessel, and they’ll handle the shuttle.
Stay the Night
The property has primitive walk-in campsites scattered through the woods, while several sit right on the creek. Only one is reachable by water, just upstream from the landing. The Jennings campsite fits multiple tents and boasts a nearby swimming hole. Most sites are named after friends who helped the Hoys open the place.

Raccoon Creek is a strong start, but Vinton County has more. Zaleski State Forest covers over 27,000 acres — Ohio’s second largest state forest. Fall foliage on those oak-hickory ridges is worth the drive alone. The 23.5-mile Zaleski Backpack Trail is one of the best overnight hikes in the state. If you are short on time, a 10-mile day loop is a great alternative.
Lake Hope State Park lies hidden in the forest. Walk the trails past the ruins of an old iron furnace, and the history of this place starts to sink in. Down the road, the Moonville Rail Trail leads to an 1856 tunnel with a reputation for ghost stories that draws crowds every fall.
