In 2012 Eddie Mealy tasted cold-pressed juice for the first time and was so impressed, he made it his goal to open a juice bar. Named after the Greek word meaning “way of life,” Diaita recently opened its doors.

Using only organic raw ingredients in their products, Diaita works with local distributors in the area to obtain the freshest fruits and vegetables. They have built relationships with suppliers to assure they are receiving consistent quality ingredients. Organic produce must be grown according to strict standards, free of pesticides, herbicides and antibiotics. Although juicing is known to be nutritious, cold-pressed juicing is the closest thing possible to sitting down and eating a few pounds of fruits and vegetables. Diaita’s juices contain no GMO products or any additives. Mealy states, “Our juice not only tastes good, but it has purpose.”

All juices are pressed on site at their store. Cold-pressed juice is made simply by extracting the juice from the fruits and vegetables using pressure rather than spinning blades. No heat is used during the juicing process, thereby producing the freshest, healthiest juice possible. Conventional juicers use spinning blades which allow heat and oxygen to disrupt the juicing process, destroying many beneficial nutrients in the process. Cold pressing preserves all of the original nutritional value of the fruits and vegetables. Basically, a big machine squeezes every last drop of juice out of the produce put in it. Diaita packs all their juices in glass bottles which are reusable, recyclable, and naturally nonporous, so the juice is as fresh as the moment it was pressed.

Cold pressing juice is a hands-on process, which is the only way to do it, and many hours are spent each day filling their cooler with a variety of flavors. Their most popular juice is Hall of Fame, named after the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It contains kale, collard greens, cabbage, apples, cucumbers, celery, romaine lettuce, parsley and lemons. Another favorite is Young Thai Coconut Milk which is made of young Thai coconut water, young Thai coconut meat, vanilla beans, vanilla extract and Portuguese salt crème. Young Thai coconut meat is lower in fat and higher in calcium than mature coconut meat. Portuguese salt cream is a form of sea salt with a sweet and creamy taste. Current seasonal flavors offered are Apple Pie, made with apples, lemon, ginger and cinnamon, and Sweet & Sour Apple which contains apples and lemon.

Diaita also offers cleanse options in 1, 3, 5, and 7 day versions for those who feel they need to do something to get them started on a healthier path or just want to feel 100% better. Cleansing detoxifies the body as it provides antioxidants and vitamins needed to clear out environmental and industrial toxins. It is a great way to start a diet and it boosts energy and focus. Debbie Darnell says a 7-day cleanse helped her lose 7 pounds, improve her skin and alleviate hot flashes. A big plus – she says she was never hungry during the process. Another customer, Nettie Taylor-Chavers, indicates Diaita cold-pressed juice helped her lose 27 pounds and avoid medication for diabetes. The raw food chef at Diaita, Adrienne Chavers, recently completed a 21-day supreme cleanse which she states resulted in a 10-pound weight loss, although she jokes it could have been more had she not been tasting her own recipes before serving them to the public.

Diaita recently added food items to their menu. Included are Raw Carrot Cupcakes, made from carrot pulp, Black Kings Rice with Dragon Sauce, and Kale Salad Marinated in Avocado. Most of the food contains carrot or beet pulp, as well as raw cashews, walnuts, raisins, and dates. Either dehydrated or refrigerated, all the food is raw and never touches heat.

Mealy, originally from Detroit, Michigan, and his wife, Shamiko, from Canton, are excited to bring this new product to our area. They believe their cold-pressed juice tastes great and is a better nutritional choice than the juice options currently available. Having a mental picture of how he wanted his store to look, Mealy did all the construction personally. Located at 4919 Whipple Avenue, NW, in Canton, Diaita Cold-Pressed Juice is open Monday through Friday, 7 am to 7 pm, and Saturdays from 9 am to 7 pm.
