A Sardis Landmark with Stories in Every Brick in Monroe County, Ohio

Located along the Ohio River, Marv’s Place Restaurant in Sardis, Ohio, isn’t just a place to grab a delicious meal; it’s a slice of local history. The building that houses Marv’s Place has seen many changes since it was built in 1894. Let’s take a walk down memory lane and explore the fascinating past of this beloved spot.

A Building with a Storied Past

J.O.K. Hubbard originally constructed the historic building for local businessman George Case. Made with hand-cut sandstone, brick, and native poplar wood, it showcases incredible craftsmanship from a bygone era. The Victorian-style storefront, with its medallions, rosettes, and colorful glass windows, has been beautifully restored to its original glory.

Early Days: A Community Hub before Marv’s Place

In its early days, the building was home to a bustling department store on the first floor, offering everything from tacks to steam engines. The second floor was a shirt factory, where women made “Case-shirts.” A gas motor explosion in 1906 blew off the lower east wall, but the resilient structure was repaired, although it leaned slightly until a renovation in 1999 straightened things out.

A Colorful History

Over the years, this building has been a bar, blacksmith shop, movie theater, and more. In the 1940s, Marvin and Ethel Merriner moved in, turning it into a grocery store and pool room, affectionately known as the “Dew Drop Inn.” Marvin, a former circus performer and railroad engineer, and Ethel created a gathering place for the community. Kids stopped by for candy and soda, and locals gathered to socialize and barter goods.

A Family Tradition

After Marvin passed away in 1964, his son Charles inherited the building. Charles added a personal touch by building an apartment and later worked for the local school system. When Charles died in 1998, his family decided to restore the building and open Marv’s Restaurant in honor of their father and grandfather.
