For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of going white water rafting. Watching others navigate the roaring rapids always filled me with awe and excitement. Yet, I never imagined I’d get to experience it firsthand.

The next morning, we geared up for our rafting adventure. We met just outside River Expeditions’ store, where we were given our gear and loaded onto the bus. Carla was instrumental in explaining what could happen and ensuring our safety. Upon arriving at the river, we met up with two other people who would become part of our team.
Expert Guidance: Ian, Our River Expeditions Guide
Ian, our River Expeditions guide, was phenomenal. He listened to any medical concerns and made sure everyone was positioned just right on the raft. As we entered the water, our guide quickly taught us how to row together and listen to his commands. He always cheered us on and complimented us on our skills and how well we were doing.
Thrill of the Rapids: Navigating the New River Gorge
As we launched into the river, the thrill was immediate. The powerful current took hold, and we paddled in unison, feeling the rush of the water beneath us. Each rapid was a new challenge, a new surge of adrenaline. The camaraderie among us grew stronger with every wave we conquered. Our rapids ranged from Class 2 to Class 5, with each level offering a unique thrill. I must admit, Class 5 was the best!
Unforgettable Moments: Riding Down the Rapids
At one point, we had the opportunity to jump out of our raft and ride down some rapids. The awe of floating freely, carried by the current, was indescribable. Feeling the power of the river firsthand, without the raft, was both exhilarating and humbling.
Ian’s Expertise and Local Knowledge
Throughout the journey, Ian expertly navigated us through the twists and turns of the river. His knowledge and enthusiasm added to the adventure, making us feel safe and exhilarated at the same time. Raised close to the New River Gorge, Ian was full of fascinating historical information about the area. He shared stories about the river’s history, making the experience even more enriching. At one point, he took the time to learn more about each of us, which made the journey feel even more personal. I can’t say enough good things about Ian being our guide.
Celebrating Success: Back at the Red Dog River Saloon
By the end of our rafting trip, we were exhausted but exhilarated. The sense of accomplishment and the bond we formed with each other and Ian were unparalleled. We celebrated our successful quest back at the Red Dog River Saloon, where we watched a video of the day’s adventures.
The Adventurous Bus Ride: Gary’s Skillful Driving
I can’t forget to mention our incredible bus driver, Gary. On our ride back, Gary, a retired fireman, skillfully handled the bus around the twists and turns, making our trip back adventurous as well. If you’re faint of heart, I don’t suggest looking out the window, but for adrenaline junkies, please do. It was a bus ride I will never forget.
